The Industrial Cluster East Groningen (ICOG) is a network of 11 energy-intensive companies aiming to cut CO₂ emissions and accelerate the energy transition. Together, they currently consume 250 million Nm³ of natural gas annually, emitting 460,000 tons of CO₂. A key focus is replacing natural gas with locally produced hydrogen, potentially making ICOG Europe’s first regional hydrogen cluster. This transition requires around €100 million in infrastructure investments, including a hydrogen distribution network and technology upgrades. Government support is essential to achieving this shift before 2030, as hydrogen remains more expensive than natural gas.
